Morning light kisses the rugged walls of Cascade Canyon and dances across the surface of Jenny Lake, creating a mix of soft golds, cool blues, and winter shadows. Fresh snow clings to the granite peaks, amplifying the contrast of warm sunrise tones against the cold stillness of the lake.

Say hello to one of the Tetons’ tiniest residents

Say hello to one of the Tetons’ tiniest residents — the American pika. Photographed among the rocky slopes of Grand Teton National Park, these small mammals are actually relatives of rabbits, not rodents.

Pikas don’t hibernate, so they spend summer and fall frantically gathering grasses and wildflowers to create “haypiles” that will sustain them through the long alpine winter. Because they’re extremely sensitive to heat, they’re considered an indicator species for climate change, making their survival story an important one to watch.
